Go Behind The Scenes With Sydney Sweeney At Her Very First Met Gala

While Sydney Sweeney’s star has been firmly in ascent over the past few years with her standout turns in Euphoria and The White Lotus, her response to being asked to attend her first Met Gala was one of disbelief. “The moment that I found out I was going to be able to go to the Met with Tory, I think it was just this surreal moment, because the whole thing did not feel real,” she says, while sitting in her makeup chair ahead of the big night. “Right now, it still does not feel real. I don’t think it’s going to feel real, and it’s going to happen so quickly, and it will feel like a dream.”

Sweeney’s enthusiasm for getting dressed up on the First Monday in May is clear from the get-go, where she enters Burch’s atelier for her final fittings and shrieks with delight upon seeing the dress for the first time. “This is definitely the most elaborate look I’ve ever done,” she says. “This is crazy!” Of course, Sweeney also had to take the time to try out the gown’s grand reveal: its voluminous white skirt features a white tie detail that Sweeney loosened to let it fall to the ground in a dramatic flourish, before stepping out in a corseted mini dress underneath. “You know what’s funny, though: I don’t know what happens after the steps,” Sweeney tells Burch, sharing a laugh.

On the big day itself, Sweeney notes she spent the night before watching clips of people arriving at the Met on YouTube—“just trying to make sure I know what I’m doing,” she says—while also meditating on her willingness to go bolder with her looks as she’s quickly becoming something of a seasoned pro on the red carpet. “I think that I’m more confident in trying new things,” she adds. “I like to look at carpets or events as different sides of myself that I’m allowed to express.” But the most important order of the day? Checking in with Sweeney’s grandma via FaceTime on her way to the event. “Hi nana!” Sweeney says. “I’m in the van heading to the Met Gala.” “What’s that?” her grandma replies, prompting hysterical laughter. “I’ll send you pictures, nana!”
